A Must Have

Philippians 3:8
7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. (NASB)

Not long ago I caught a TV newscast interviewing two young men who had totally changed their lifestyles. They had been very successful in their pursuits, both attaining prestige in their jobs, financial success, yet they weren’t at peace. Something was missing. They had all the things they needed but weren’t totally happy. They were friends and decided they’d start on a new journey and began selling everything they owned. The things they had accumulated things didn’t offer anything more than something to gather dust, token of what they could afford but didn’t need.

Together they founded the Minimalist mindset or movement if you can call it that. They had it all but weren’t happy; and they literally gave everything away and began to live on less. In the process they started a blog and found there were others disillusioned with the things the world offered and also desired to live minimally. They learned they could live with the minimal things. They did not share any religious beliefs during the interview, and that got me to thinking about the must have for believers.

Paul said that he counted all the things that he had gained prior to knowing Jesus Christ personally as nothing, as loss, or as KJV puts it, as do-do (dung). Paul was a Pharisee of the Pharisees. He had honor, position, and I’m sure wealth; yet when he encountered the living Lord Jesus Christ, his life was transformed. He became a minimalist and recognized that life is not measured in things but in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For Paul his must have was more important than all he had gained in his life.

What’s your must have? Perhaps it’s time to change your mindset from letting the things of the world declare your value and importance and gain the one must have that will totally transform your life, give you joy unspeakable, full of God’s glory, grace, love, and provision. Say, my must have is Jesus.
