Colossians 1:16
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible, and invisible,
whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him.
Paul begins his letter to the believers at the church in Colosse with his usual greeting of grace and peace and then shares his heart for these believers and for us today. He wants them to know without doubt God’s work in their lives so that they will be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and understanding. He wants them to remember that they’ve been translated from the power of darkness into the kingdom of His dear Son [Jesus] who has redeemed them through His blood. He wants them to get the BIG picture and recognize the power of God in their midst.
His message continues to speak to us today. By HIM were ALL things created. It leaves no doubt who the Creator is which is verified in the Gospel of John. John states that “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God…all things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:1-3).
By Him—Jesus—were all things made-created- in Heaven and in earth and which also include thrones, powers, dominions, principalities. All of these words represent the power of God. Thrones represent the seat of authority and we know that Jesus has been given all authority. Dominion is the manifested power coming from the root word meaning to perfect or complete. Jesus has completed His work and it is perfect. Powers and principalities consist of the beginning of power and rule, all coming from God.
Do you see a glimpse of design and planning in God’s creation from this verse? He created ALL things. To create things you must be a creator. Jesus is a creator, not only of the world we see, but a creator of new life in the hearts of those who will see His desire for man to enjoy His goodness, His fellowship, His creation.
