Colossians 2:7 – Rooted and Built Up in Him

colossians 2-7 700x400

Colossians 2:7 (NASB)
7 Having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith,
just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

When I look at this verse I see three sets of words all ready for a three-point sermon.

Point one—firmly rooted. In the parable of the sower He planted some seeds that didn’t take root. “But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away” (Mark 4:6). It’s important to get the roots down deep in order to beat the scorching sun. These are the problems and stresses of life which put pressure on the believer. Without the Word firmly rooted faith may fail and the plant will just wither away. Paul says in Ephesians 3:17, “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love” (NASB). The root is in Him [Jesus] alone.

Point two—built up. “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). We get our roots deep and then we are built up strong. Paul says it’s the word of grace which is able to build you up. Trying to keep the law will tear you down. It’s when you know your sins are forgiven and there is no condemnation, then you can build yourself up in the most holy faith (Jude 1:20). “And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward” (Isaiah 37:31).

Point three—established in your faith. Establish (stablish in KJV) means to “to fix, make fast, to set” (Vine’s). It has an idea of stabilizing or stabilization. These are the ones who have taken in the Word and planted their roots deep and have grown a strong life in the Word. They are fixed and set in their faith walk. When persecutions, the cares of the world, and lust of things come, they are strong and able to produce fruit to one hundredfold.

Say, “I’m rooted, built up and established in Jesus.”
