Ephesians 1:4 – Chosen in Him

ephesians 1-4 700x400

Ephesians 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,
that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

We are chosen by God in Jesus. God chose you. Isn’t that a wonderful thought for the day? God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings insomuch as He chose us in Jesus.

The words “He hath chosen” has led to all kinds of doctrines in the church. Some said he chooses some people and not others. The doctrine of predestination evolved from this thinking. God chooses some and not others. Jesus made a statement that added to the thinking. “For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). In another place He says, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you” (John 15:16). This is the doctrine of election. You might find It disconcerting. But God is not the author of confusion. We get it confused all on our own.

Paul makes it very personal in this verse. He has chosen us. We can say that the “us” is you, me, Paul, and the people with him whether they were Jews or Gentiles. We are the chosen of God in Christ. Jesus says that He does the choosing. It’s through Him you were chosen. If you are in Him [Jesus] you have been chosen. The chosen or the elect are the members of the body of Christ—the universal church.

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you” (John 15:19). Jesus has chosen us from before the foundation of the world. Before the earth was even formed Jesus had chosen us. In the Old Testament, Israel was the chosen nation. In the New Testament, the church is His chosen people. Jesus has chosen you. Say out loud “Jesus has chosen me. I’m the chosen of God in Jesus.”
