1 John 3:24 – His Spirit In Us

1 john 3-24 700x400

1 John 3:24
4 The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us (NASB).

This verse does not say that He abides in us if we keep His commandments. Keeping commandments is not the way to salvation. In fact, John says “we know” He abides in us because we have the Holy Spirit living within us.

Abiding is not a part-time thing. It’s never that God abides in us when we do good and leaves when we do bad. That’s not what abiding is. We are sons and daughters of God or not. Jesus abides in us or not. It’s not sometimes. When we invite Him in through faith in the grace of the finished work of the Cross, then He abides there forever. “16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him (Romans 8:16-17 NASB).

Therefore John is not saying we have to obey a commandment to have Jesus dwelling in us. John uses this phrasing many times. We receive not by works but by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8, 9). However with Jesus in us He prompts us to keep His commandments. They are for our benefit.

He is also not talking about the Ten Commandments. He is talking about the commandment Jesus gave His disciples in John 13:34 and reiterated in John 15:12. In fact, John also quotes in verse 23. “23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment” (1 John 3:23).

We are to believe. God has written this law on our hearts. If we are in Jesus and He’s in us, our desire is to be like Him. An outflow of His love in us is our love for others. It will just be there operating in us because Jesus is there operating in us. We don’t do commandments out of duty, we do them out of love.
