1 John 3:3 – Pure in Him

1 john 3-3 700x400

1 John 3:3
3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (NKJV).

It’s important to understand the context. This is particularly true when a verse refers to something said in previous verses. This is the case when John says “this hope.” So let’s look at the context.

“1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is (1 John 3:1-2 NKJV).

From this we see the Father’s amazing love for us. It’s so amazing because we can now be called the children of God. What love is that? It’s the “God so loved” kind of love. From this we know that we are children of God and God loves us and calls us His children. This is where we should focus our attention. We need to live in that place of love as His children.

It’s interesting that John knew Jesus intimately. John knew he was the disciple that Jesus loved. He understood that love. John saw Jesus the man and touched Him. He even saw the resurrected Jesus. He saw Jesus ascend into the sky and disappear. Yet now John is saying we don’t know what we shall be. He only knows one thing, that when Jesus appears we shall be like Him. We will truly see Jesus as He really is—the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Then John seems to say, let’s get ready for Him. We will be like Him when he returns so let’s start being like Him now. That should be an outflow of love for Him. Everything flows from love and not just works. He has done so much for us that it should flow freely from us as well. We just want to clean up our act and be like Him. It’s that love of His that flows from within.
