Don’t Reason Away Your Confidence

Mark 11:31
31And they reasoned with themselves, saying…

The Chief Priests, Scribes, and Elders in Jesus’ day wondered about Him. They questioned His motives and His authority to speak as He did. It wasn’t according to how they thought it should be. They reasoned among themselves.

Do you spend time reasoning on what the Word says? I’m sure you do and you may not know you’re even ‘reasoning’. Basically, reasoning is a rebuttal to a fact. It is trying to come up with a solution to a problem and figuring it out on your own. If someone says that the water in the lake is freezing and you don’t believe their word, you’ll reason it out. You’ll think well now, wait a minute. It was just probably cold to them. It’s a nice, sunny day out so how could the water be freezing? You’re reasoning without sufficient information to form a true opinion.

It’s the same way when you have something you’ve brought to the Lord in prayer. You’re sincere in wanting your need taken care of. Perhaps you’ve even referenced scriptures to back up your request, and when you prayed, you’ve quoted the verse, confessed it, and then thanked the Lord for it. BUT a little later you find that you’ve entered into times of reasoning about what you just stood strong for. Doubts start popping up in your mind. I just hope when I go for that interview, I’ll get the job or I’m hoping they don’t give me a bad report at the doctor today because I’ve been believing for a good one. You get the idea.

When you’ve taken a stand of faith on God’s uncompromising, eternal promises, then you’ve got to stay there and not entertain reasoning thoughts. Reasoning thoughts can make you or break you. They can undermine your faith if you allow them to circulate in your thoughts too long. They will always leave you feeling defeated because you see more credibility in them than you’re seeing in God’s Word.

Don’t reason away your answers. Don’t allow doubt or fear to enter your thoughts. When they try to creep in, jump on God’s Word like a bird on a bug or a baseball player running to home plate and dives in. Don’t reason away the power of God’s Word. It will supply all that you need (Hebrews 10:35).
