Ephesians 1:13 – In Him You Were Sealed

Ephesians 1-13 700x400

Ephesians 1:13-14

“13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory” (NKJV).

The word “trusted” (italics) is not in the original text. The New American Standard Bible says it like this. “13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14 NASB).

In 2 Corinthians 1:22 Paul puts it this way, “Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.”

When we were born again, we became new creations. The old us was replaced by a new us. Our spirit was made alive and we received a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26). Then we were sealed and were given the Holy Spirit as a pledge for what God has in store for us.

We are sealed in Him. The word seal has many definitions. Vine’s says it this way: “a seal or signet, an emblem of ownership and security, being secured from destruction and marked for reward, and the impression of a seal or signet.” The Greek root word for sealed means to enclose or fence in.

God has sealed us in Jesus. Nothing can break the seal. Our spirits are forever sealed. Nothing can penetrate the seal. We are forever His. The moment we believed we received the seal—the stamp of ownership upon our spirits. We are God’s own possession. We have the Holy Spirit within us as a pledge from God of our inheritance through Christ Jesus.

We are secure in Him. We are sealed with the signet ring of God. We are marked as a child of the most high God. We are His forever and nothing can take us out of His hand. It’s a done deal.
