2 Corinthians 5:18 – Reconciled By Jesus

2 cor 5-18 700x400

2 Corinthians 5:18

“18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation” (NKJV).

Here’s what Vine’s Expository Dictionary says about the word “reconciliation.” “With regard to the relationship between God and man, the use of this and connected words shows that primarily ‘reconciliation’ is what God accomplishes, exercising His grace towards sinful man on the ground of the death of Christ in propitiatory sacrifice under the judgment due to sin.”

Why do we need reconciliation? “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12)

We messed up through Adam and it led to God separating Himself from us. We were no longer friends with God. Though He lived with man, He remained behind a curtain. We were as aliens in a foreign land. There needed to be a divine exchange. There needed to be a change from enmity to friendship—from darkness to light.

That happened through Jesus, God’s only begotten son. God’s purpose was that through Jesus He could provide a way to reconcile man to Himself. That’s exactly what He did. He has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus.

Because we have been reconciled, we have been given the ministry of reconciliation. Our primary purpose is to share the love of God with the world. The word ministry is the Greek word “diakonia,” which we get deacon from. Everyone has been called to be a deacon of reconciliation. We have the privilege of telling the world that God loves them, is not mad at them, and has good news so good that it seems too good to be true. But it’s true. The gospel of Christ is the gospel of grace—the gospel of reconciliation.

This does not mean you have to get out there in the world and get some stars on your believers badge or else God will get mad at you. There is no condemnation even if you never lead anyone to the Lord. Maybe you are just water. The outflow of His reconciling through you will flow automatically out to others.
