Colossians 2:11 – The Old Sin Nature Is Gone

Colossians 2-11 700x400

Colossians 2:11

“11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature” (NLT).

I really don’t like to talk about circumcision. It was an Old Covenant rite ordered by God upon Abraham and his male descendants and dependents, as a sign of the covenant made with him. When the Old Covenant was made, it was made with real cutting. Paul says the New Covenant has a circumcision of sorts. It was not the old physical cutting but a spiritual cutting.

Before you came to the Lord, “13You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross” (Colossians 2:13-14 NLT).

The Jews were called the circumcision. With the gospel of grace, all outward ordnances were done away with. Just as circumcision was a sign of the Old Covenant, the sign of the New Covenant is that we no longer have that old man of the flesh. God did away with that old sin nature. “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3).

Some people still call themselves ‘just old sinners saved by grace’. We no longer have that old sin nature. We are new creations in Christ. We are saints not sinners. We are no longer identified by outward rituals, and that old inward sin nature. It has been removed. Does sin still affect us? Yes, but it’s not from our inward man. The old man had a sin nature and only darkness emanated from that. Now we have a new nature. We have the nature of Jesus as we are in Him and He in us.

It’s all about Jesus and what He has done. It is He who took the old sin nature and gave us a new nature. It’s in Him we are the new circumcision, not made with hands but through the finished work of God’s grace.
