John 6:57 – Living By Him

John 6-57 700x400
John 6:57
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father:
so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.”

This verse sounds strange by itself. It helps to know the context, what was going on before and after this verse to get a better meaning of what Jesus said. Jesus was teaching in the Synagogue at Capernaum and some people murmured against Him because of what He said. What did He say? That He was the bread from heaven and furthermore that He was the bread of life (verses 41, 48). They didn’t understand that. Even His disciples weren’t quite sure what He was talking about. It was a hard saying, who could understand it?

Jesus communicated to the people that He was the bread sent from their God, their Heavenly Father, and that He would forever satisfy their hunger. He was telling them that His blood would provide everything that His Heavenly Father wanted to give them. He was telling them that what He would provide would be totally life-changing and fulfilling beyond their wildest dreams. They didn’t understand God’s provision in this way, but they so needed to understand God’s great love and how He would restore man back into fellowship with Himself.

The message of the Cross is Love. Jesus’ body was broken for you. His blood was shed for you. You’ve heard those words probably many times before Communion. His Body and blood for the total, once-and-for-all removal of sin. But only knowing what He’s done, acknowledging that fact doesn’t change you. It’s only when you receive His gift that you receive Him. It is then that He dwells IN you—Christ in you.

If it hadn’t been for God’s unsurpassable love for you and I, we wouldn’t know the extravagance of being loved so immensely and provided for so abundantly. That’s what it means to let Him live in you. Yes, it’s a ticket to Heaven but it’s also everything you need to live here on earth until then.

Participation is required to experience the fullness of life that God has for you. He’s not mad at you and doesn’t hold anything against you. Jesus did it all because He loves you. Partake of Him and live.
