Galatians 6:14 – Glory Only In The Cross

Galatians 6-14 700x400

Galatians 6:14
14 But God forbid that I should glory, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.

What Paul is saying in this passage is that no matter your accomplishments and credentials, they are nothing to boast about. The word “glory” here gives the idea of boasting. No matter how great you are in your sight or even other people’s eyes, it is nothing to vaunt over others.

You might have worked hard to receive the world’s accolades. Maybe you worked your way through college and graduate school and received some initials after your name like MD or PhD. I have a few myself. It’s a worldly reward for meeting the educational requirements of an institution. Maybe you have worked hard to work your way up the corporate ladder. Perhaps you have scrimped and sacrificed to establish your own company. You have done well in this world. There is nothing wrong with these things as long as you did it legally.

Yet I think when we really look at our accomplishments, how much of it was because of God’s grace in your life—maybe all of it. All of us that have accomplished things which are important in the world know it was only possible through Jesus. Yes, people who don’t know Jesus accomplish things also, but it’s by their own abilities and lots of it by chance.

Paul had lots of credentials, but they were not important. If he had anything whereby he could boast, it was only in the Cross—the finished work of Jesus. Without the Cross we would still be lost and dead—the walking dead. We would have no hope and helpless to have any future. When we died, it would be vanity.

Because of the Cross, Paul says he was crucified or dead to the world. He was no longer held in its system and the world no longer wanted him. The world was dead to Him.

God so loved the world, He gave. God loves the people of the world. Jesus was crucified for everyone in the world. We are dead to the system but we love the people because of the Cross in which we boast.
