1 Peter 1:3
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Here Peter writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit points out once again that it is all about Jesus.
“According to His abundant mercy.” After Adam and Eve the earth was so corrupted that God stepped in finding one person left. He destroyed all mankind except for Noah and his family who found grace and mercy with the Lord. But He destroyed everyone else. How is that mercy? The mercy was for all future generations. God needed an uncorrupted lineage to the Messiah. Without Noah we wouldn’t have had Jesus.
God’s mercy carried through to a time and place where Jesus came. Things were definitely not looking good, especially for non-Jews. But God was merciful to us.
You will find the word “abundant” translated many ways with words such as much, great, many, plenteous, often, and abundant. You will find this word some 365 times in the New Testament. For some reason God has gotten a bad rap. They say He’s stingy and always trying to test us. He wants us to be humble so He humbles us through poverty and sickness. All lies.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us” (Ephesians 2:4).
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…” (Titus 3:5).
Grace says the total opposite. God’s unmerited favor is abundant. Jesus came to give us the abundant life (John 10:10).We can go boldly into the throne room and obtain mercy and grace 24/7. (Hebrews 4:16).
Someone once said that by God’s mercy we didn’t receive what we deserved and through grace we received what we didn’t deserve. Peter says through the abundance of mercy we have a living hope. We are born again through this living hope who is Jesus who God raised from the dead as living proof of His mercy.
God has abundance of all good things for us. Let’s see God as the God of abundance. He is rich in mercy through Jesus. It’s all about Jesus.
