2 John 1:9 – Abiding in the Teaching of Christ

2 john 1-9 700x400

2 John 1:9
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. (NKJV)

You need the context for this one.

“7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.” (2 John 1:7-11 NKJV)

This is a familiar author and he continues in the same language of 1 John. John, the disciple who Jesus loved and who writes the most about love, often comes across as harsh. Many groups throughout the church age have taken this passage to mean that if you aren’t teaching the way we are, then we want nothing to do with you. They shun people and separate themselves from others.

John is not talking about Christians who have a difference of opinion on how to interpret the Word. We have lots of denominations and churches which formed after people didn’t like the interpretation of the Word. Everyone who studies the Word will see it in the revelation Jesus has given them.

John is talking about deceivers who do not confess Jesus came in the flesh. They are antichrist. The finished work of Jesus cannot mean what it does without Jesus literally coming as a baby and dying as a man on the Cross. It’s all about Jesus. There are groups labeled churches who don’t even acknowledge Jesus even existed. There are groups who try to pull people out from under the teaching of Jesus to their new teaching. There are many ways to heaven they say.

Stick to the teaching of the Cross. Therein is great reward.
