John 16:23 – Ask In His NameDecember 12, 2014
John 14:13 – In Jesus NameDecember 14, 2014
1 John 2:27
27 But the anointing which you have received of Him abides in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him.
There are lots of interpretations about what this verse means. Let us first to define the word “anointing.” It is the Greek word “chrisma” and it means to smear or rub. It came from the Old Testament use of oil for setting apart a priest for the work of the ministry. “Then shall you take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him” (Exodus 29:7).
The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him” (Acts 10:38).
Now Jesus is called “Christ” which means “anointing or anointed one.” Look at what John said in an earlier verse. “But you have an unction from the Holy One, and you know all things” (1 John 2:20). Unction is the same word as anointing.
Look at what one of the demons called Jesus. “Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth? are thou come to destroy us? I know you who you are, the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:23-24).
John said this anointing came from the Holy One—Jesus. Jesus is the anointing. It is Jesus who is truth and cannot lie. It is Jesus who dwells within us. We have the mind of Christ—the anointing or anointed one.
There is only one anointing. There is not an anointing to do different tasks or functions such as prophet. The power to get things done is grace. The anointing in this passage will help you see truth from error. That no one need teach you. In fact, teaching can very well be error. The anointing will keep you from error.
Whether you want to say the anointing is the Holy Spirit or Jesus, they both dwell in you. You listen to them and you won’t slip into error.
