17And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
This is Mark’s account as Jesus gave what we term The Great Commission. He called the disciples and said they were to go and preach the good news of God’s love and salvation to all the world and in their going there would be signs following those who believe. What Jesus told His disciples is what He calls each of us to do today—share the good news of the New Covenant of God’s love and grace with mankind. You and I have a message to share, and we can do that in His name.
But note that His commission didn’t stop at just making disciples, fellow believers. He wants all of us to go in the power of His name and do what He did. We are in Christ and He is in us. As we operate in faith, believing His Word, we will see signs and wonders in our midst. We can confidently lay hands on someone who is sick and know that they will recover. It isn’t something we can do on our own, in our own power or strength. It’s solely by the power of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:9-10 says: Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
God’s ability didn’t stop when Jesus died, and it certainly didn’t stop after the Apostles died. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
