The Lord Knows Your WaysMarch 15, 2015
You and I are emotional people. God gave us emotions. He is an emotional God and His nature resides in us. Where you and I get into trouble is when we let our emotions rule us—being led by what we “feel” at the moment. You can’t enjoy the rich, free life Jesus provided if you’re always subject to your emotions.
Recently a pastor shared that when your emotions rise up and try to yell louder than the truth of God’s Word, it’s time to say “phooey” on your emotions”. You and I have the ability, control, and power to override emotional overloads and spikes. We don’t have to listen to them. What does 2 Corinthians 10:5 tell us? “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
All emotions aren’t bad in our lives, but when we allow those to dictate what we do, what we feel, and even what we think, then we’re in for discouragement, fear, worry, and a fall. That’s not the liberty Jesus has for you or I.
How do you counter the negative emotions? Do what Paul suggests in Philippians 4 (verses 7-8). Corral the negative destructive thoughts/emotions and recognize that they’re not what Jesus provided for you. Concentrate on purpose (meditate) on God’s goodness, forgiveness, His love and grace that will enable and empower you to walk in perfect peace, surrounded by His provisions in every area of your life.
