Are You Butterfly Free?

Everyone enjoys butterflies. They’re unique and colorful. At the Sibley Center in Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia, you can enter the ‘butterfly house’ and watch through glass windows as caterpillars go through various stages in their transformation into beautiful butterflies. At a certain point when they are ‘reborn’, they are released in a huge enclosure designed especially for them to fly free and enjoy the delicacies of various flowers.

Have you ever wondered if butterflies think of their past life? I doubt it. They’ve become a new creature. Why should they consider what was in comparison to what they now enjoy? I believe the Lord gave us butterflies to remind us of our freedom and new life in Jesus as 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; all things are become new.”

Our friend and Pastor in Nairobi, Kenya, George Odero, says it well: “A caterpillar goes through the process of metamorphosis and it becomes a butterfly. Before the transformation, it used to crawl, it was ugly, and was bound to earth/dust. Why? Because it was a caterpillar. But after metamorphosis it now flies around beautifully. Why? Because it is now a butterfly. It is no longer a caterpillar. Caterpillar life has no dominion over the butterfly.”
