God is your defender. Your defense lies not in your strength but in the Lord’s.
“Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them: let them also that love Your name be joyful in You” (Psalm 5:11).
The word “defend” here means “to cover”. In Psalm 91:4 it says “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings will you trust: His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” In other places it refers to a fence or a hedge.
In our travels, we have seen many forts built to defend the people from their enemy. The Castillo De San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida comes to mind. All these manmade defenses eventually failed.
God, however, will never fail. That’s just another reason to be joyful. Those who love the Lord are joyful for all of His benefits. It’s not just about what you can get if you love the Lord. It’s grace. You can’t earn it. You love the Lord apart from any benefits. It’s what He has done through the finished work of the Cross. God is the hedge around you.
