Because Christ died for you, you are holy in his sight. Maybe you don’t feel holy or your behavior doesn’t seem holy, but you are holy. “But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence” (Colossians 1:22 MSG).
This is a hard concept for believers, especially if they have grown up in a church demanding they be holy. Certainly we want to act holy as we learn what that means, but we are already holy in God’s sight.
We are holy not by what we have done but by what Jesus has done. By dying on the Cross for us, you and I are holy through Jesus. God sees us through Jesus. What He is we are in this world.
Our holiness works its way out from Christ who dwells within us. It’s what we are so it shows up in who we are in Christ. Holiness is not something we have to attain through any kind of special works. We are holy because Jesus is Holy.
