Glorious Liberty

Lookout mountain TN

The Believer has glorious liberty. The creation has yet to see this liberty. “20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God (Romans 8:20-21 NKJV).

Many commentators see this glorious liberty as yet to come. But I see this liberty as realized in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Everything was finished there on the cross. Only one thing is yet fully complete and that is the redemption of the body. That will complete the liberty of the believer.

The main idea of liberty is not just freedom from sin, but freedom to access the presence of God is a special way. It’s not just freedom from sin and death, but the freedom of life in us through the Spirit who dwells in us. It’s not just freedom from the punishment of hell but the freedom of eternal life and our participation in the heavenly call.
