God Is Not Self-Seeking

Pink Dogwoods
1 Corinthians 13 is first about God. Love comes from God and God is love. So any characteristic of love is essentially characteristics of God. Look at this verse and particularly the sentence that is bold.

“It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act becomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]” (1 Corinthians 13:5 AMP).

Love does not seek its own. Love goes outward to others not inward to self. In doing so it seeks the best for others. It does no insist that self comes first. This is difficult in today’s society of self-help and self-esteem. But the self is selfish and that’s the opposite of love.

God is the best example of selfless love. “But God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
