Liberty or License

Charlene at Gettysburg

Liberty and license are two totally different words. You are free to bang yourself in the head with a hammer but why would you want to do that? You are free to sin, but why would you do that? It’s like banging your head with a hammer.

Nowhere in the Bible are you given a license or a permit to sin. There is no such thing. Sin is sin. Many think grace is that license, but it’s just the opposite.

A person who embraces the message of grace knows the result of sins—death. For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age (Tit 2:11-12).

Grace gives the power to overcome sin. It does not permit sin. Grace knows that sin is an enemy and will, like the hammer to the head—hurt. Grace has buried sin through the Cross. Liberty says I’m not going to hit my head with a hammer because that’s just stupid.
