Paul quoted Psalm 44:22 in his statements here in Romans. To many Christians facing intense persecution, it seemed Psalm 44:22 was coming to pass in their lives. In fact, many were being led to the slaughter. But Paul had another view of it.
“36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us” (Romans 8:36-37 NLT).
“No,” Paul emphatically said. No matter what happens, we are more than conquerors. We are overwhelmingly victorious. We are always victorious through Christ. In the end we are not defeated. We don’t just suffer persecution, we are victorious. We have a living hope that goes far beyond temporary suffering. The weight of the glory awaiting is far greater than the persecution which might come our way. We are victorious even over death for it cannot defeat us.
When things aren’t looking good, we have the right to pronounce that “No, we are overwhelmingly victorious. Nothing can defeat us.”
