“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). From the very beginning something was very different about Jesus. He appeared on earth just like other men but was not at all like other men. The law which had the people in a bondage to trying to do right had been given through Moses. Moses led the people out of physical bondage to the Egyptians but into another bondage of the law.
Jesus came to lead people out of bondage and in that Moses was a type. But Jesus would bring grace and truth to the world. The law was truth when Moses gave it, but now Jesus replaced that truth by greater truth. Jesus was actually the one who gave Moses the law, but the law pointed to Jesus who would bring grace—the savior who would deliver man from the law and replace it with God’s original intention—grace. Grace is present truth brought to us by Jesus.
