We see a lot of many wonderful pictures of Jesus in scripture. Jesus is both the Lamb and the Shepherd. John the Baptist saw Him as the sacrificial lamb upon whom all the sins of the world past, present, and future would be laid. “The next day John [the Baptist] seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Sin was then one of those debilitating things from which people longed for relief. It was a terrific bondage brought on by the severity of the law. John the Baptist saw Jesus as the one who would do something about the sin problem. Jesus would take away the sin of the world.
Jesus took sin upon Himself on the cross. The believer is now not under the bondage of sin, but under grace. Grace is the power to overcome personal sin that still tries to take dominion. In God’s eyes, Jesus washed away our sins by His precious blood.
