Despising Our Shame

Despising the shame” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus endured the cross and despised the shame. If you have ever seen any of the passion plays or movies that depict the horror of what Jesus went through, you get an idea of the shame He had to endure. He had done nothing wrong, and in fact, had not violated any of the laws, but was unjustly and unreasonably condemned. People who saw Him heal the sick turned on Him and shamed Him for doing what the Father told Him to do. Jesus despised the shame, that is, He thought little of it. He was taking our shame with Him to the cross. We were the ones who deserved the shame Jesus endured.

Jesus took our shame. Jesus grabbed the shame of disobedience, sin, and condemnation from us and stood in our place. Jesus despised shame because He loves us. He didn’t want us to have to go through the shame which was our lot. He despised the shame which would have been ours.
