Jesus Came Down from Heaven

Sun in the trees

I am the bread which came down from Heaven” (John 6:41). Not only is Jesus saying He was the bread of which the manna in the wilderness was a type, Jesus said He came down from Heaven. This had two implications to those hearing. First, they immediately pointed out that He was Joseph and Mary’s son. They began murmuring among themselves. No one that they had ever heard of “came down from Heaven.” Abraham hadn’t, nor did Moses, King David, or any of the prophets. This was unheard of. They thought it was impossible so basically they saw Jesus as a liar.

The second implication here is that Jesus told them a great deal about Himself when He said He came down from Heaven. Only God could do something like that. If they could get past the impossibility of it, they would see that Jesus was telling them the truth. He wasn’t just born a baby. He actually came down from Heaven where He was the Son existing in a triune relationship with God. They failed to see the truth.
