What Leads to Repentance?

Goodness leads to Repentance

Some people have learned that repentance comes when a person confesses their sins. Some preach that the harshness of the law leads to repentance. But Paul makes it clear that it’s not the bad news of the gospel but the good news of the gospel that speaks of the goodness of God through the finished work of Jesus. “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). Repentance is not changing behavior though that might happen, but it’s changing the mind about what a person believes. Repentance is changing the mind about serving a harsh God who stands ready to punish sin to seeing a good God who already has punished sin and now seeks to bless His children with every spiritual blessing. It’s God’s goodness that changes our minds about Him to see Him as He really is.
