Having Compassion

COMPASSION

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous” (1 Peter 3:8). Someone said, “Jesus was moved with compassion. If we don’t have compassion, it’s impossible for us to do what Jesus did.” The word compassion came from a Latin word meaning “to hurt with.” Compassion is emotional. Compassion says “I see the hurting you are going through.” Compassion itself drives some to help others, but compassion is a fruit produced from love. When we understand how much God loves us and all that He did for us through the finished work of Jesus, then it has to flow outward. Compassion for the lost, hurting, lonely, sick, impoverished provides an outlet for the love of God in us. Without God’s love we will just be someone who helps the needy. With love we can reach deeper and bring Jesus to the needy.
