The Blind Leading the Blind

blind-leading-the-blind

Jesus spoke many times in parables. Though He spoke about everyday things He was really speaking of deeper spiritual things. He couched the message of grace in little stories. Even the disciples had to ask Jesus what these things meant. “And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?” (Luke 6:39). When Jesus spoke this parable, the hearers pictured one blind man leading another along the road and falling into a ditch. I’m sure they could understand that saying but what was Jesus really saying to them. The hearer was thinking of two blind men walking along the road. But the word blind had spiritual meanings. He was talking about the spiritually blind who were in the presence of God and didn’t know it; and in fact, rejected Him. The people were stuck in a religious mindset and couldn’t see the freedom and life standing before them. Sounds like today.
