The Compassionate Shepherd

Moved WIth Compassion

Just as Ezekiel prophesied, Jesus saw the same thing when He looked at the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). Sometimes I set on a bench in downtown Gatlinburg and watch the throngs of people wandering by. I think of this verse wondering how many people have no shepherd and are just drifting through life. When Jesus saw them He was moved with compassion. The word literally means to be moved in one’s inwards. That is a deep sympathy for their plight. It’s the kind of compassion that brings us to tears and leads us to tell them that there is a shepherd and there is no reason to wander aimlessly through life without purpose or plan. Let them see Jesus the good Shepherd.
