Keep Yourself From Idols

no idols

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen” (1 John 5:21). This is the last thing John wrote in his first epistle. That is what he wanted to leave with the hearer or the reader. He began with his characteristic dialogue to “little children.” These are the infants in Christ—perhaps the new converts who are more familiar with the idols of the day. Stay away from them as no good can come from them. They are merely stone and wood carved into an image. But they can pull you away from the message of the Gospel which is the Gospel of grace—the finished work of Jesus. Even today we might not have statues but we have our idols. Keep yourself from them, John would say. Nothing can take the place of Jesus. He is the center of our world. We revolve around Him. We can’t allow other things or other people to take His place at the center. So keep yourselves from idols.
