Don’t You Dare Test The Lord Your God

Jesus said to him

“Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God” (Matthew 4:7). Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:16 as He addressed the devil’s second temptation. Again, as He did to the first temptation, Jesus quoted scripture—it is written. Here He responds when the devil said He could jump off the highest point of the temple (and even quoted scripture) and would be safe. Jesus said that doing something like that would be putting God to the test. God is God, we aren’t. We can’t manipulate God by testing Him to do something. We can’t force God’s hand in any situation. People sometimes do that today. They write out a check with no money in the bank and send it believing God will supply money to put in the bank before the check is cashed. Sometimes it does come but writing out a check with no money in the bank is fraud, and God isn’t going to help you be a fraud. Believing a promise of God and waiting for the manifestation is putting God first and not trying to manipulate Him. “Don’t you dare test the Lord your God.” (MSG)
