Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me” (Matthew 19:21). This is a prime example of a verse taken out of context. If someone handed you this verse, you might think that if you want to follow Jesus, you have to sell all you have and then you can follow Him. This is a call for a cult. How many people have sold all they have and followed some leader to their destruction? On the other hand, people have used this verse as their call into the mission field and have sold all they had and went out ministering for the Lord. The context is a dialogue between Jesus and a rich young man who wanted to know how to have eternal life. Jesus said follow the law. When the young man said he had, Jesus told him that wasn’t enough. His riches kept him from fully committing to Jesus. When something stands in the way of following Jesus, get rid of it. The law requires perfection. Jesus is the way of grace. Follow Him.
