Beware The Leaven

yeast

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees” (Matthew 16:6). When Jesus says to “take heed” we need to look at what He is saying. Leaven is a substance, typically yeast, which the baker adds to dough to make it ferment and rise. The Pharisees and the Sadducees were the religious leaders of Jesus’ time. Jesus said be beware of the leaven of religion. Paul reminded the Galatians that A little leaven leavens the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9). The word religion originally meant to bind as in bind or bound to religious vows, practices, or traditions. Religion is about trusting in self. It began with Adam and Eve when the devil said do this and be like God. We live in a time when religion is resisting the message of grace, when law becomes like leaven in the lump of grace. When people base religion on doing, like the law binds a person to despair. “Keep these rules, heed these principles, do what you’re told, and you’ll be acceptable to God.” That is leaven seeping into the lump of Christianity. Grace is good, religion is bad.
