No Spiritual Understanding

natural man

And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?” (Matthew 15:16). In response to a question about a statement Jesus made He asked the disciples if they still hadn’t figured it out yet. They had heard Him teach and explain many things to them, yet they still hadn’t seen the light of revelation. Okay, they weren’t yet saved and they didn’t have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them yet, but Jesus expected more. Paul says in the last days one characteristic will be seen: people will be without understanding (Romans 1:31). The Greek word goes so far as calling someone foolish. A fool says in his heart there is no God. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). The things of God require a spiritual understanding. They are things that go contrary to worldly views. You can’t figure them out with logic even though to the believer they are logical. “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12).
