The New Covenant

New Covenant of Jesus

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28). This is the first time Jesus used the term New Testament—New Covenant. This seemed rather inconsequential in the whole conversation, but it was an earth shattering and altering statement. Something was about to change. Jesus was declaring that as they had been living under another covenant, He was making it old, and He was initiating a new one. This covenant would be written in the blood of Jesus. This covenant would remit sins forever. No longer would they have to go to the temple with their sacrifice for the sin offering or the trespass offering. That was about to change. This was a covenant between the Father and Jesus. It could never be broken by man. This would be a covenant not in law and works but in believing alone. This would be God’s grace and favor offered to man through the finished work of Jesus on the cross. “This is My blood of the New Covenant.”
