To Fulfil All Righteousness

To Fulfill All Righteousness pic

When Jesus came to John to be baptized, John at first refused. “But Jesus replied, “It is right for us to meet all the Law’s demands – let it be so now” (Matthew 3:15 (Phillips NT). The King James says “to fulfill all righteousness.” The Amplified Bible says “to perform completely whatever is right.” Jesus was righteous so He didn’t need to become righteous at baptism. He fulfilled righteousness. Jesus was born under the law (Galatians 4:4). He lived His life on earth in obedience to the law thus as He said, He came to “but to fulfil” the law (Matthew 5:17). Jesus had to do right in order to fulfill all righteous requirements of the law. He was obedient unto death on the cross and thus provided a way for us to be righteous by faith. Jesus fulfilled the law so in Christ we have fulfilled the law. Therefore, we are no longer under the law but under grace. We are baptized to identify our lives with His life in death burial and resurrection.
