What About Denying Yourself?

Deny Yourself pic

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24) Is Jesus teaching self-denial? Is He saying the way to holiness is through denying your hopes and dreams and wants and that’s the way to life? How much is enough? Read your Bible one, two, three hours a day or fast three days a week or four? No, Jesus is comparing your life with Christ and without Christ. He is talking to the “any man” who wants to follow Him must come through the way of the cross. You don’t have to die to self, you have already died in Christ. Galatians 2:20 says you are already crucified with Christ. You have taken up the cross, the place of Jesus’ sacrifice. You are no longer trusting in yourself for salvation, but in Jesus. To deny yourself is to totally abandon your life to Jesus. He is your life. He is your holiness. He is all you need to meet all God’s requirements for eternal life. Knowing you are already dead in Christ sets you free to live life to its fullest.
