Who Are The Snakes?

lots of snakes pic

You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” (Matthew 23:33 NIV2011). Jesus had harsh words for the teachers of the law and the Pharisees—religious leaders. He called them snakes. Was Jesus condemning them to hell? No! Jesus loved the Pharisees, but He was warning them that they are on a path to hell and asked if they knew how to avoid it. Many Christians use words like these to condemn people’s behavior. First, Jesus wasn’t condemning anyone to hell. “17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:17-18). Sadly Jesus was talking to the religious—those who thought they were justified by their works. This is also true for those who have not yet believed in Jesus as Savior. But Jesus is not talking to the believer. “Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!” (Romans 5:9 NIV2011).
