If You Continue

Continue

“31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). What does Jesus mean when He says “If you continue?” Is there a chance you won’t continue? Jesus uses the same words in His teaching on the vine: “If you abide in me.” When we hear the word ‘if’, we see it as a conditional statement and usually it is. To whom was Jesus was talking? Jews who were arguing with Him. Not believers but unbelievers. He told them if they wanted to be His disciples, they needed to abide in Him. This is a thought fully elucidated by Paul and other New Testament writers. To abide in Christ is to be “in Christ” which believers are. There is no ‘’m in one day and out the next, or I’m abiding today but not tomorrow. No, that isn’t the way to live an abundant life. Jesus was telling them that believing in Him was the way to becoming His disciple, and to know the truth that frees. If you are a believer, you’re continuing in the Word.
