Jesus The Temple

pink azaleas

Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). Jesus was always saying such profound things. Only God could think of these things and to God only would it apply. The Jews often asked for a sign to confirm what Jesus said. Jesus never did what they expected. He always did the unexpected. The Jews in their usual natural thinking chuckled because it took them 46 years to build this temple. Jesus would see it destroyed, and He would rebuild it in 3 days. Of course, Jesus was not talking about a temple built with hands, but a spiritual temple. It’s interesting that Paul used this same idea in 1 Corinthians 6:19. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). So it isn’t strange that Jesus called His body a temple. He was talking about His death and resurrection, another thing that the Jewish leaders couldn’t or wouldn’t understand. As Jesus was a temple, so are we. Like Father, like Son, like Jesus.
