Called To Be Saints

Many scriptures tell us what we should be. These are usually in the Greek imperative, which come across as a command. If you look at them (which we will this year), they will be things we already are in Christ. So when Paul says that we are “called to be saints” in Romans 1:7, we must ask ourselves if we are saints. Notice that the to be is in italics, which means it really says, “called saints.” When we hear the word saint, we often think of the people the Catholic Church as deemed saints. A saint is “one separated.” The believer is a saint. “This sainthood is not an attainment; it is a state into which God in grace calls men.” We are saints. Christians are a community of saints. We pray for one another (Ephesians 6:18).  The gifts of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12) are being perfecting us. A saint is what we are. To be is “to exist in actuality; have life or reality.” We exist. We be saints. That’s what we are. So let the light shine through you to the world around you. All the saints salute you.
