Godliness is Gain

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment” (1 Timothy 6:6 NASB). Godliness is resting in the finished work of Jesus. Therein lies the contented life. These are the believers that know their God. They are the ones who worship in Spirit and in Truth. Through this intimate relationship with God comes great gain, whether it be wealth in finances, social, emotional, health, or anything pertaining to life. Some have supposed gain is godliness as Paul says in the previous verse. But that is putting the cart in front of the horse. Gain doesn’t make you godly. Neither is gain a measure of your spiritual growth. But living in the godliness given you is the means to great gain. Godliness is not following a list of dos and don’ts. The kingdom of God is not in doing all the right things, but is about righteousness, peace, and joy, all gifts of God’s amazing grace. Live in the grace, resting in him, and being who He directs you to be is godliness working out in the world.
