Positive Reinforcement

“Positive reinforcement is a very powerful and effective tool to help shape and change behavior.” That is the world’s way for changing behavior—behavior modification. Too often, that same thinking has crept into the church. Church has become a place of behavioral modification. That method of behavioral change comes from the external. Change your behavior or else. Change it to what? The youth today are asking these questions. They are always being told to change, but who is setting the standards for behavior? We have seen this rebelling to artificial standards throughout the decades. There has always been someone to stand up as say, “Who says we have to behave that way?”

There is plenty of positive reinforcement in God’s Word. The difference is that change comes from the inside. We have the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of truth…He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13 NKJV) and we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Behavior is a fruit. It comes forth from the presence of Jesus in us. When we know the truth, it sets us free from performance anxiety and efforts to change our behavior. We need to filter all scripture through the prism of God’s grace.
