The Beginning Of The Gospel

The writer of the second book of the New Testament, Mark, starts his writing with a straightforward, powerful statement. He sums up the book with these words. “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). The “beginning” is very significant. First, Mark was pointing out that they had been under the law for centuries and that was bad news. No one could be good enough. That’s how many churches still teach it. Second, this was a new beginning and this was the start of the gospel—the good news.

Here Mark shows how the beginning of the gospel started and it was the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. We must remember that Mark wrote this well after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, maybe as late as 66 A.D. He saw how this gospel was the good news and how it had affected the world. Third, this beginning was Jesus. “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last” (Revelation 22:13). Jesus is the beginning of all things, and in Him we all come to know the gospel of salvation—the gospel of grace.
