Burst That Old Wineskin

New wine, new wineskins. Old wine old wineskins. What doth it mean grace people “37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. 38 New wine must be stored in new wineskins. 39 But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say” (Luke 5:37-39 NLT). Some churches teach that wine is the Holy Spirit. However, what if wine was symbolic of the blood of Jesus?

In communion, Jesus taught us it was the blood. Then to interpret this we would have to say the old wine skin is the Old Covenant—the law, and the new wineskin, the New Covenant—grace. Jesus then would be saying don’t put the finished work of Jesus into the context of the law. You just can’t mix them.

The New Wine—grace—would burst the wineskin. Look how Jesus ended this. Some will say they still think the old wine—law—is fine and don’t need new wine—grace. That’s what many are saying today. The Ten Commandments are fine. I don’t need grace. Try grace and burst out of that old law based wineskin.
