What Changes A Heart?

There’s an interesting correlation between story of the Good Samaritan and the story of the Prodigal Son in terms of compassion and mercy and legalism (Luke 10:25-37, Luke 15:11-32, John 8:1-11). Don’t read these accounts through a legalistic lens. The Good Samaritan, not driven by the law, showed mercy and compassion on the man robbed and beaten whereas the Priest and Levite steered clear of helping a man who wasn’t a Jew. Notice that the brother of the prodigal son was insensitive and stingy, failing to understand that he already enjoyed his father’s blessings. In both cases, they incorrectly understood God’s love and how they were to receive and walk in it.

Jesus spoke of these examples to show what was missing. He knew that legalism could not change a person’s heart but experiencing His Father’s love and mercy could and would (Ed Elliott, Word of Life World Outreach). Let’s open our hearts so we fully receive God’s great love not only for us, but for all men. Let’s be quick to share His love, to exemplify His compassion and mercy. When we remove the shackles of legalism, we’ll be empowered to act with love, compassion, and mercy to the world around us.
