Above All Things Put On Love

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:14 NKJV). This is Paul’s “above all things” statement. Just as Peter, he points to love as the thing that ties it all together. King James says to “put on” which is in italics and not really in the Greek text. Paul is saying above all—love. Love is the overarching and far-reaching pinnacle of Christianity. Love is God’s Hallmark card to the world. Above all, know that God loves you—unconditionally. He is not mad at you for your behavior or your faults. You are His beloved.

Love is the bond. The word bond means the middle thing that holds two things together. It like glue holding two pieces of wood together. If you prefer a food analogy, the peanut butter between two slices of bread. Love makes everything complete—perfection. God is love, and God is perfection. Love brought us together with the Father. We are stuck like glue to Him and nothing can “separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39). Above all things stands love.
